Most of the names on this list are typical examples of surnames that were adopted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time before which many Finns had no surname in today's sense. In the romantic spirit, they refer to natural features — virta "river", koski "rapids", mäki "hill", järvi "lake" — often with the suffix -nen added after the model of older, mainly eastern Finnish surnames such as Korhonen and Heikkinen. "Hämäläinen" literally means an inhabitant of Häme. Heikki is a Finnish form of the man's name Henry.

Almost half of those names are also male given names; this might originate from the use to give found children a first name as last name, but most of all to the tradition of naming, to desambiguate many peoples, with a reference to their father's given name ("François Martin" being François, son of Martin). Other names come either from a physical trait ("Petit" (small) "Leroux" (the red-haired one), a local indications (Dubois (from the wood), Dupont (from the bridge)), or an occupation (Lefebvre (Smith), Fournier (Baker) Mercier).

Russian surnames may originally denote "son of" or "serf of". For surnames ending with "ov" or "in", there is an "-a" feminine ending. Thus, for example, "Ivanova" means "belonging to Ivan" or "Ivan's daughter".

The Russian equivalent of "Smith, Jones, and Brown" (that is, the generic most popular surnames) is Иванов, Петров, Сидоров, or "Johnson, Peterson, and Sidorson". The last of these, Sidorov - "of Sidor" is actually not a very common surname at all, while Sidor as a given name is virtually unknown.citation needed

Map of Spain showing the percentage of population born in each province corresponding to the 10 most common surnames for that province. Source: Instituto Nacional de Estadística (Spain) 2006

The top 10 surnames cover about 20% of population, with important geographical differences. The regional distribution of surnames within Spain was homogenized mostly through internal migrations, especially from 1950 on. Names typical of the old crown of Castile have become the most common all over the country.

It is common for people having one of the most common surnames to be known by their second surname (usually their mother's maiden name, but sometimes the second surname carries across generations) instead of by the first one, so that their name stands out (e.g. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Benito Pérez Galdós).
